i assume you are aware that the new covenant is without regulation as in deut. 28. that under the new covenant there are no unchallengable regulations, such as natural law, women teaching in church, etc.

Bob: "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved". Hang on to that simplicity. But it's not always a bad thing to doubt one's salvation. You must be born again, but remember that faith is the chief evidence of the new birth. Do you have faith in Christ? I say trust in HIS abilities and not your own. Pray that God will give you assurance that you are His.

Sin plagues the Christian as long as he is in the flesh. "In my flesh dwelleth no good thing" (Romans 7). Do not be alarmed that your flesh and the mind of the flesh unceasingly pushes you to sin. But be alarmed if you have no conscience of sin. In other words, can you sin without it bothering you? I think sin bothers you as your words reveal. You have a desire for holiness that you find difficulty in achieving. In fact, you find it impossible. Guess what?...SO DO I! And so do all other Christians. We love our Lord, but find ourselves struggling to please Him due to the weakness of our flesh.

ALL Christians experience this struggle - even the ones that you call "men of faith". I would recommend that you get and read the book "Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners" by John Bunyan and see for yourself the great struggle of faith of one of the great Christians in history.

God has a purpose for you - he did not call you into the faith for nothing! But his will can be secret and slow to be revealed to you. Your mission may be "small", it may be large - you don't know what's ahead, but you should anticipate the day that you - your life and/or testimony - will be the means by which God may call another of His elect into His Kingdom.

In due time God will give you some measure of victory over your besetting sins, but keep in mind that it will take longer than you would like, and it may not be as complete as you would like. In the end, He will have the glory and His purposes will be fulfilled.

As for your critical approach to the Bible, this could be because of some exposure to Bible critics which are prevalent in our world today - even in the Church. You may find the grammer difficult if you are reading the old King James Version - I appreciate the struggle it can be but I believe that that is the Bible you should read if you can. Another version may help you understand the text better but other versions should be regarded as lower in realiability in my opinion.

You concern about being sick after your conversion could come from exposure to certain christian sects that teach that bodily healing accompanies salvation. Let me tell you that this simply is not true. The people that teach such things are just as sick and dying as any other group of people in the world. They like to quote the verse that says "By His stripes we are healed". But that verse is clearly talking about healing the broken realtionship between God and man.

And finally, the Lord forbade the first couple access to the Tree of Life as a judement on their sins. God made salvation impossible EXCEPT through Christ's redemptive work.

I hope this helps and you will have the peace of God in your heart and mind.

Hi, i found this letter very interesting as i have many periods of doubting my salvation. This can be for many reasons but my ability to commit what to God must be haenous sins which is the one which worries me most.
My understanding of scripture tells me i should now be able to "go and sin no more" or at the very least be able to "overcome" the desires of the flesh and "walk in the spirit" but have to admit i dont know what that really means. Its a spiritual term but seems unattainable to me. I have also suffered ill health since shortly after "my conversion" in 95 which makes me "doubt a lot" about "my redemption" being sure and certain. I feel i now read scripture with a critical heart and seem to find fault in even the grammer. I am very questionable about things i took for granted to be true in 95..Ie: why was the tree of life in the garden when if eaten of before the tree of Knowledge man would have lived forever as rebels? making salvation impossible as written. This must be true or God would not have "barred the way" to the tree of life for fallen man. Even though deep down i WANT this gospel to be the truth about afterlife i am now thinking that my whole "christian experience" has been built on wishfull thinking as the alternative world views are so terrible. I would LOVE to be like the many guys i listen to who are SO SURE and seemingly SO HOLY as scripture claims you need to be to see God but sadly i feel more like " a doubting Thomas with the Loyalty of Judas as i seem to sell out my original conviction of needing and accepting this saviour by doing "sinful things" which have haunted me all my adult life, ie: gambling, lust and a lack of ambition or laziness. So, how can i rid myself for ever of these torments and like the "men of faith" i trust and admire, walk in victory over my sinful nature and make something of the last 16 years of my working life going on into retirement and beyond?. I would be so grateful for any advice that actually works for me. Thanks.

No. Apologies are too late. Bush and Cheney are war criminals, and the fact that Obama wants to just sweep our evil past under the rug for domestic political expediency shows we've got a long way to go to get back to being a nation we can be proud of. And Reagan? Hero?!? Iran-Contra: Look it up...

Meg: Thanks for your input. I don't believe I've ever said that being a Christian requires infallibility. Only Christ Himself is infallibly sinless.

I don't think the Bible teaches us that Church is "for" sinners. It is FOR believers and their children that have been called out of the world and gathered into God's family by His grace. It is the duty of everyone that bears Christ's name to "depart from iniquity" (II Timothy 2:19). While it is well established that all have sinned and are therefore sinners, yet the Bible does not ever refer to God's people as "sinners", but rather "saints".

Although those of us that have been born again often fall to sinful temptations, nevertheless we have, by the effectual working of the Holy Spirit, a sincere desire to achieve perfect holiness in worship to the Savior we love.

Those whose Christian lives are absent of this holy desire should not boast of a conversion they have not experienced.

On the issue of judging, I admit that I make judgments every day. So do you.

The Bible tells us that there are Christians among us that are able to "discern both good and evil" and that we are to "judge rightly" (John 7:24). I don't know how anyone can obey the command to "judge", which appears many times in the New Testament, without actually committing an act of "judgment". See I Cor 6:3-5, "Know ye not that WE SHALL JUDGE angels? how much more things that pertain to this life? If then ye have judgments of things pertaining to this life, SET THEM TO JUDGE who are least esteemed in the church. Is it so, that there is not a wise man among you? no, not one that shall be ABLE TO JUDGE between his brethren?"; and I Cor 10:15, "I speak as to wise men; JUDGE YE what I say"; and I Cor 11:13, "JUDGE in yourselves: is it comely that a woman pray unto God uncovered?"; and I Cor 14:29, "Let the prophets speak two or three, and LET THE OTHER JUDGE."

As for "old man", I have a few grey hairs but I'm not sure if I am actually "old". But I am curious - where did you learn to speak to people in such a familiar way? Your "church"?

I have been saved 30 years and answered an altar call at a Baptist church. I was not sure what I was doing but knew God was speaking to me and calling me unto Himself. For it is not by our might nor our power but by His spirit. Since then I have been in ministry and have led many to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. yes they all said the salvation prayer and because God was calling them unto Himself they were deeply touched and repented and cried as their hearts were being touched by God. Almost all have gone on to grow and follow and serve Jesus. No it was not my prayer or but their response to the cross that opened up the door for God to work in their life. I now have a nursing home ministry and when I preach the cross these elderly people cry and accept Jesus. Not because of the prayer but because of the truth and the word of the Gospel that has gone forth. The salvation prayer just helps them to confess that they want Jesus as Lord of their life. When we go back these dear saints are hungry for more of God and sit there weeping through the whole service. I also know many friends that were saved at a huge evangalistic service and went on to be mighty warriors in the Kingdom of God. We forget that salvation is a work of the cross and that it is God that draws man unto His self and weather we open our heart and respond to an altar call, or we reach out to God in the local church or while reading the bible. It is still a work of God and can use any means to draw the sinner unto Himself.

Thank you
